iOS 18 Software Update
Monday 16th September 2024
Every year Apple releases a new version of iOS software for iPhones. This year its released on Monday 16th Sept and its called iOS 18. It normally includes loads of new features, security updates and redesigns of existing Apple processes. This year Apple is allowing 3rd party repairers to reuse some selected parts, they are also checking serial numbers of parts to make sure that lost or stolen Apple parts from customer devices aren't being used. We feel is a great idea and applaud Apple for trying to stop iPhones from being stolen and harvested for parts.
Below is one that will apply to you if you have had your iPhone repaired by anyone other than the Apple store.
When you upgrade to iOS 18 on your iPhone during the setup process its going to ask you to reconfigure any part that you have previously had replaced by any 3rd party repair company.
If your screen or part replaced was either a 3rd party aftermarket one, a refurbished genuine screen, or a genuine screen taken from another iPhone then its going to fail the Apple configuration and warn you that the part "Is not funtioning as expected" or "This part could not be configured because its not a genuine screen or may not be functioning correctly".
This is slightly misleading as we could swap two iPhone genuine parts or screens on two brand new iPhones and these messages would still show, its only when Apple themselves do it when it doesnt! Its also misleading as it insunates that your iPhone screen won't work when infact the screen is working perfectly normally and has done since the repair.
When we replaced your iPhone screen or battery a different version of this message appreared and the engineer that repaired your device explained when returning the iPhone that you would get a message from Apple and that your iPhone would function perfectly despite the warning message.
This new iOS 18 message is the same message, just in a different design and wording. The new way of Apple messaging about your repair Is nothing to worry about and your iPhone screen or part will carry on working as usual as it did before you updated the software to iOS 18.
